REND LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rend Lake and the University of Illinois Extension 4H program are partnering to host a free Kid’s Fishing Derby Tuesday at the Dam West Recreation Area, across from the Rend Lake Visitor Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fishers under 5 years old as well as children who are first-time fishers are invited to learn fishing basics before the derby at the Rend Lake Visitor Center, Catfish Cove Pond from 10 to 11 a.m.

The Kid’s Fishing Derby is limited to 50 participants and registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing pole, tackle, bucket, and life jacket; however, a limited supply of necessary equipment will be provided for those without equipment. Children ages 5 to 13 are invited to participate and compete for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in each age category. The Derby will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. and be followed up with weigh-in and awards.
