CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police are investigating the theft of a purple 2016 Dodge Challenger from the 1500 block of West Taylor Street Sunday night.

Police say they met with the victim and evidence found at the scene suggests the window was smashed allowing the suspect access to the interior of the vehicle. A red 2016 Dodge Challenger was stolen in a similar way on May 9 of this year in the 200 block of South Plover.

The investigations into both incidents are active and ongoing. While these thefts likely were a result of forcible entry and taken without the keys, below are some tips that may help prevent vehicle theft.

Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips

• Never leave your car running unattended, even to dash into a business, store, etc.
• Never leave any keys in the car or ignition, inside a locked garage, or in hide-a-key boxes.
• Always roll up your windows and lock the car, even if it is parked in front of your home. Many vehicles today come with some type of security system from the factory. Normally there are upgraded systems available if you ask. Also, remember that alarm systems have value, but don’t solely rely on them.
• Explore exterior video systems for your residence with a camera that includes the places where your vehicle will be parked.  Ensure the video system is clear enough and covers enough of an area to help identify suspects. Also, ask your neighbors if they also have video recording systems and if their systems cover areas where you park your vehicle.
• Vehicle tracking systems such as LoJack and OnStar can track the location of stolen vehicles.
• Always park in high-traffic, well-lighted areas, when possible. If you have a vehicle that is currently targeted and parking in a garage is not an option, consider blocking access by using a different vehicle that is not desired by car thieves.
• Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes. These devices will deter some criminals by creating more time for the criminal to complete the theft or make enough noise to draw your attention.
• Copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report.
• If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.

While forced entry vehicle thefts are not common in Carbondale, because of crimes of opportunity, it does occur. Vehicle owners should consider the steps outlined above to reduce the risk of being victims of auto theft. Stay safe!
