CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale will appoint Chief of Police Stan Reno as Interim City Manager which will become effective April 1, 2024. The City Council is expected to approve the appointment at the March 26 City Council meeting.
Chief Reno was born and raised in Carbondale and graduated from Carbondale Community High School before attending SIU Carbondale where he received a degree in Political Science and Administration of Justice. He joined the Carbondale Police Department in 1997. Chief Reno attended the 247th session of the FBI National Academy in 2011, the FBI law enforcement executive development training in 2015, and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar in 2023. He has received past recognition as employee of the year for the City and numerous awards and commendations during his career.
Chief Reno has held numerous leadership positions at the police department to include serving as DEA Task Force Officer, serving as Sergeant and Lieutenant while supervising the Investigations Division, serving as Deputy Chief of Operations, and finally as Chief of Police after being promoted in 2021.
As Interim City Manager, Chief Reno will continue to uphold the values of integrity, transparency and service to the City of Carbondale. His passion for Carbondale, close community ties, leadership experience, and strategic vision for the City will allow him to continue to work collaboratively with city officials, department heads, and community stakeholders to ensure the well-being of the City of Carbondale during this time of transition.
In addition to consideration of this appointment, the City Council will discuss the process to find a permanent City Manager at the March 26 City Council meeting.
Current City Manager Gary Williams announced his resignation earlier this month for another opportunity in the region and for family reasons. His resignation is effective at the end of this month.
