COLLINSVILLE – Ameren Illinois reminds natural gas customers that if they “Smell Gas, Leave Fast.”

What does that mean? Well, if you notice a rotten egg odor, that’s gas. Other signs can include blowing dirt, dead vegetation, bubbling water or a hissing sound.

If you experience a gas leak, leave the area immediately taking all people and pets with you  while avoiding turning off light switches, opening windows or doors or using electronics. Then call Ameren at 1-800-755-5000 or 911. Ameren responds to emergencies at no cost to ensure your safety.

Ameren says knowing what to do can prevent panic and save lives. Early detection and reporting helps Ameren respond faster and minimize danger. Educated residents are more likely to help neighbors and report suspicious odors.
