MURPHYSBORO – Starting Thursday, the sale and distribution of Kratom and Kratom-derived products in unincorporated areas of Jackson County will be prohibited according to the Jackson County Board.
The County Board recently adopted a public health ordinance regarding Kratom following increased medical evidence of serious health risks associated with its use.
Even though the ban starts Thursday, the County Board is allowing time for education and voluntary removal of products from circulation.
Kratom comes from a tropical tree native to southeast Asia and is known for its stimulant and sedative effects. It is commonly consumed as a tablet, capsule, or extract mixed into liquids. It’s available at local gas stations and convenience stores. Kratom remains unregulated and poses significant health risks including death. It has not been approved by the FDA.
Marion, Herrin, Johnston City and Eldorado banned Kratom in their communities this year.
The McLeansboro City Council recently held the first reading of an ordinance banning the sale and delivery of Kratom and its derivatives in the city. Council members are expected to approve the ordinance next month.
