FAIRFIELD – Two people wanted on warrants stemming from a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office investigation into illegal distribution of methamphetamine were arrested Thursday after one of them led law enforcement on a pursuit earlier that day on I-64 through three southern Illinois counties.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff Chris Otey, just after noon, deputies joined in the pursuit on I-64 coming from Jefferson County. Jefferson County deputies and Mt. Vernon Police were trying to catch Reggie Shemwell and Danielle Adams for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office as they were in their jurisdiction.

The pursuit continued at 110 mph through Wayne and White counties on I-64. Shemwell was able to avoid stop sticks deputies used by swerving toward the median. He then crossed the median going westbound, got off the interstate and traveled down some rural roads back to the Pond Creek area of Wayne County. He was able to get away from law enforcement after conditions on gravel roads were too dusty.

Shemwell was seen during the pursuit throwing several items including money out the vehicle. The money was recovered. Adams got out of the vehicle in Mt. Vernon before the  pursuit on the interstate. Jefferson County authorities caught her a short time later.

Then around 11 p.m., Wayne County Sheriff’s personnel and a United States’ Marshal entered a wooded area near the railroad tracks southeast of Fairfield. Using a thermal capable drone, they found Shemwell hiding behind a tree. He was taken into custody. He drove his vehicle into the woods and completely covered it with foliage.

Shemwell and Adams are both in the Wayne County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
