CARBONDALE – A one-day household chemical collection will be held at SIU’s Banterra Center south parking lot on Saturday according to the Jackson County Health Department.
You will be able to safely drop-off waste by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Items to be accepted at the collection include: paint thinner, aerosols, household cleaners, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, automotive fluids -such as antifreeze, motor oil, old gasoline, rechargeable batteries, solvents, polishes, pool chemicals, lawn chemicals, oil-based paints, e-cigarettes/vapes, propane and helium tanks and Mapp-gas cylinders. Mercury-containing devices, such as thermometers, thermostats and fluorescent and CFL bulbs are also being accepted.
Items which will absolutely not be accepted at the collection include: latex paint, explosives, ammunition, fireworks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, farm machinery oil, medical waste, electronics, alkaline & lead-acid batteries, appliances, tires, and radioactive material, syringes, needles and medical waste. Eligible participants wishing to dispose of materials in containers larger than five gallons must contact Jackson County Health Department prior to the event.
