METROPOLIS – The Metropolis Police Department has released the name of the victim who was murdered following a fight at a Metropolis truck stop Tuesday night.

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse says it’s 41-year-old Samuel S. Stalions of Golconda.

Chief Masse says officers were sent to a fight in progress at Acee’s Truck Stop on East Fifth Street at 10:40 Tuesday night.

Upon arrival, officers saw Stalions lying on the floor in the gaming room. Video surveillance showed that Stalions had been pepper sprayed seconds before the fight began.

Police arrested 36-year-old Jonathon J. Riley of Kirksey, KY and charged him with first-degree murder. The video showed that after Stalions was knocked to the ground, Riley choked and then put his knee on Stalions’ neck and used the weight of his body to put additional pressure on the Stalions’ neck until he became unconscious.

Officers initiated first aid measures and Stalions was transported to Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. He was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Riley was lodged in the Massac County Detention Center.
