NASHVILLE, Ill. – Nashville, Illinois police are seeking a 40-year-old Oakdale man in connection with a Saturday night police pursuit and is asking the public for help locating him.
According to the Nashville Police Department (NPD), shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, an officer attempted a traffic stop in the area of West St. Louis Street near North Broadway Street of a vehicle with suspended registration.
The vehicle reportedly didn’t stop initially but briefly pulled over when additional police units arrived.
The vehicle pulled over near North Grand Avenue and officers were able to positively identify the driver as Edward J. Sterns Jr.
Sterns reportedly refused to comply with commands and would not exit the vehicle and was allegedly observed reaching for an item with his right hand that police said could have been a weapon.
Sterns then accelerated the vehicle and fled from the traffic stop at a high rate of speed westbound on State Route 15.
Police continued following him as he reportedly continued into the west side of the county at high rates of speed, turned onto Weaver Creek Road where he fled at excessive speeds causing NPD units to lose sight of his vehicle.
NPD ultimately located Stern’s vehicle that had been wrecked off the roadway in the area of Weaver Creek Road and Wilson Road but he had apparently fled the scene on foot.
NPD received additional assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Irvington Police and Fire Departments who deployed their drone in the area. NPD also deployed the department’s K9 for a track of the suspect.
After an extensive search, it was determined that Edward was gone from the area and was unable to be located.
Police are seeking charges and a warrant on Edward for aggravated fleeing and eluding, obstructing/resisting a peace officer, as well as numerous traffic-related offenses.
If anyone has any information of Stern’s whereabouts they’re urged to contact the Nashville Police Department at 618-327-8232. Tips can remain anonymous.
