Murphysboro Woman Killed in Wednesday Morning Crash

JACKSON COUNTY – A Murphysboro woman was killed in a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that 23-year-old Summer Scholz of Murphysboro was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.

Police said around 8:50 a.m., the sheriff’s office responded to the crash on Illinois 149 at Violet Road, about four miles west of Murphysboro.

A preliminary investigation showed a silver 2016 Toyota Corolla was eastbound on Illinois 149 approaching Violet Road. Witness statements and scene evidence showed the driver, Sholz, was negotiating a curve and in the road and lost control. At the same time, a 2022 Freightline, driven by 60-year-old Clinton Simpson of Southhaven, Mississippi, was westbound and approaching the same location.

Scholz’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck the front of the Freightliner.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Illinois Department of Transportation assisted on the call.
