FRANKLIN COUNTY (WRXX) – Illinois State Police responded Sunday morning to a report of a car on Interstate 57 that burst into flames when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
According to ISP, around 10:06 a.m., a vehicle was traveling northbound on I-57 just north of mile marker 71 in Franklin County at a very high rate of speed. The car swerved to the left, hit the metal stakes used to guide an asphalt paver, struck several construction barrels then veered off the 6-8 inch drop-off from the driving lane onto the center median.
As the car spun out of control the fuel tank was damaged and a car erupted into flames. The vehicle ultimately came to standstill in the southbound lanes.
No one was injured in the crash.
