BENTON(WQRL/WISH/WMCL) – An elderly woman died after falling into pile of burning leaves in a semi-secluded area of her property in the area of East Taylor and 10th Street in Benton Wednesday afternoon.
According to Benton Fire Chief Shane Cockrum, firefighters went to that area just after 4:30 p.m. and learned that a neighbor saw the woman and made an immediate call to 911.
Upon firefighters arrival, the woman was found semi-conscious with severe burns. An immediate request for Air Evac was made by Benton Fire and Abbott EMS personnel.
The woman was treated on scene for life threatening burns and transported by air to an appropriate facility where she succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
The incident is still under investigation. Names have been withheld until family members are notified.
The incident was handled by the Benton Fire Department, Benton Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Abbott EMS and Air Evac.
