MT. VERNON (WRXX) – Mt. Vernon officials announce the successful closing on the purchase of the Register News property Wednesday.

The property, located at 911 Broadway, was purchased for $589,000 with plans to use the site as a new green space and to relocate the building to use for storage.

The City Council and the Jefferson County Development Cooperation said they believe redeveloping the site as a green space will not only improve the look of downtown, but will help to draw more people and businesses to the area.

“This is an exciting time for Mt. Vernon’s downtown district,” Mayor John Lewis said. “This project removes what the community has considered an eyesore and re-imagines it into a beautiful outdoor community gathering space that we hope will encourage further redevelopment of downtown Mt. Vernon.”
