MARION – Another Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois is set to take off from the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in Marion on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
According to the group’s website, Mission 9 will take veterans to Washington, D.C., the second flight this year as Mission 8 took place in June.
Each mission takes 85 veterans to Washington where they visit memorials built in their honor, such as the National WWI Memorial, Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial.
Flights are free for veterans and funded by donations, according to the website. Veterans Honor Flight arranges for accommodations for any veteran requiring special medical care or mobility aids throughout the day. Each veteran is accompanied by a guardian to provide both physical and emotional support.
Mission 9 is expected to hold 87 veterans and will return to Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois at 8:15 p.m. Those interested are encouraged to attend the Welcome Home Celebration to welcome them home.
All veterans are eligible for the Honor Flight. Any veteran wishing to be considered for a future flight may apply here.
