Salem Man Arrested for Attempted Sex Abuse, Grooming

SALEM (WRXX) – A 51-year-old Salem man was arrested over the weekend on charges of attempted sex abuse and grooming.

Salem police arrested Dereck Purcell early Saturday morning on a Class 2 felony charge of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Class 4 felony grooming and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to police, Purcell had taken a substantial step towards criminal sexual abuse against a 14-year-old victim and was in a position of supervision over the child, which resulted in the charge of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The grooming charge arose from alleged statements of a sexual nature Purcell made to the victim and the contributing to the delinquency charge stems from Purcell allegedly providing alcohol to the victim and other juveniles.

The alleged events reportedly took place over multiple dates in July and August of this year in Salem and the surrounding Marion County Area.

Purcell was taken to the Marion County Jail where he remains awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bond.
