CARBONDALE – An accident involving a pedestrian and a school bus happened Wednesday morning in Jackson County.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, 52-year-old James Craft of Carbondale was taken by the Jackson County Ambulance Service to a local hospital and was later airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Police said around 9:40 a.m., the sheriff’s office received reports about the accident on Giant City Road at the entrance to Wildwood Mobile Home Park in rural Carbondale.
Deputies along with the Jackson County Ambulance Service and first responders from the Makanda Township Fire Department and Carbondale Township Fire Department arrived.
The sheriff’s office said evidence on scene indicated a Vienna school bus taking students to a field trip at SIU was traveling north on Giant City Road when a pedestrian, identified as Craft, crossed the road in the northbound lane in front of the school bus.
No students or staff on the school bus were injured in the accident.
The roadway was closed for two hours while crews investigated the scene.
