WAYNE COUNTY – A two-vehicle fatal crash was reported in Wayne County Friday afternoon.
According to Illinois State Police (ISP), 61-year-old Evelyn Flexter of Clay City, and an 8-year-old girl also of Clay City were pronounced dead and 22-year-old Olivia Flexter of Clay City, Illinois along with a 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, both of Clay City, were airlifted to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said at 3:30 p.m., a van driven by Olivia Flexter was driving south on US 45 near County Road 2200 North as a semi-trailer combination driven by 29-year-old Patrick Gaboury of Clinton, Iowa was traveling north in the same location.
Flexter attempted to turn east onto 2200 North in front of Gaboury when Gaboury struck Flexter’s van. The van left the roadway to the east and struck a tree.
Flexter was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. She had four passengers in her van when the crash happened. The 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl were flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other two passengers – Evelyn Flexter and the 8-year-old girl – were pronounced dead. Gaboury reported no injuries on scene.
ISP said the crash is under investigation. Flexter was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way.
