(IOCI RADIO) – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul is filing his office’s first hate crime lawsuit.
Raoul filed the suit in Carroll County against a mother and her son who allegedly intimidated their Black neighbor for months. This included displaying swastikas, the N-word and the Confederate flag, as well as hanging a bound and shackled mannequin-type likeness of their neighbor by a noose in their front yard.
The suit seeks civil penalties and equitable relief and is meant to “send a strong message that hate and bigotry will not be tolerated,” Raoul said.
