MT. VERNON – Multiple area fire departments responded to a fire early Sunday morning that burned a two-story home in the 800 block of North Street in Mt. Vernon.
According to the Mt. Vernon City Fire Department, no one was home when the fire was discovered around 2:25 a.m. in a corner of the home. The fire had already spread inside a wall to the second story before firefighters arrived. The fire then spread through the structure, causing both heavy smoke and fire damage.
Multiple agencies provided mutual aid at the scene, including Jefferson County Fire Protection District, Kell, Woodlawn, Bluford, and Centralia City.
All available off-duty Mt. Vernon firefighters were called out and Waltonville and Wayne City firefighters stood by at a Mt. Vernon Fire Station in the event of another call.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
