Third Arrest Made in April 30 Carbondale Shooting

CARBONDALE – A third arrest has been made in connection with a fight and shooting that happened during the early morning hours of April 30 in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue in Carbondale.

According to Carbondale Police, as detectives continue to follow up on the incident, they identified the shooter as 28-year-old Cody A. Dempsey of Carbondale.

On Wednesday, members of the Carbondale Police Department executed a search warrant in the 1900 block of Stephens Road and arrested Dempsey. Detectives charged Dempsey with Attempted First Degree Murder and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.  

Police said assistance from community members and video surveillance assisted detectives during this investigation. Information will be submitted to the Jackson County State’s Attorney for consideration of additional charges. 

Two other suspects – 27-year-old Demarcus O. Jones of Carbondale and 28-year-old Charlton Joshua Patterson of Carbondale – were recently arrested in connection with the incident.

They were both charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Violation of a Bond Condition. They were currently out on bond awaiting court appearances for prior weapons offenses at the time of their arrests.
