IDOC Proposes Plan to Reduce Inmate Populations at Pontiac, Vandalia Prisons

It appears the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) will make changes at some downstate prisons.

IDOC has developed a plan which includes a major downsizing at two prisons in Pontiac and Vandalia. Under the proposed plan, the inmate population would be reduced at Pontiac Correctional Center by around 60 percent.

The inmate population at Vandalia Correctional Center would also be reduced by 60 percent.

Both aging facilities face maintenance costs, especially at Pontiac, which opened in 1871.
