Latino Advocacy Group Proceeding With Lawsuit Challenging New Legislative Maps

CHICAGO (AP) – Lawyers for a Latino advocacy group said they intend to proceed with a lawsuit to overturn the state’s new legislative district maps.

They claim the new maps, approved this week, actually reduce the number of majority-Latino districts, even though the Latino population grew over the last decade – both in total numbers and as a percentage of the state’s population.

A similar, but separate, lawsuit was also filed by Republican Senate Leader Dan McConchie and House Leader Jim Durkin. Both suits name Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Chris Welch as defendants, along with the Illinois State Board of Elections.
