I-57 Crash Sends Three Buncombe Residents to Hospital

FRANKLIN COUNTY – Three Buncombe residents were injured in a two-vehicle crash on I-57 in Franklin County around 6:30 Monday morning.

According to Illinois State Police, a tanker truck driven by 70-year-old Thomas S. Allen of Jackson, MO was going north on I-57 at milepost 66 in the left lane as a minivan driven by 26-year-old Nikolas L. Walker of Buncombe was also traveling in the same location in the right lane.

Allen attempted a lane change and struck Walker’s minivan causing it to spin out of control. It struck a concrete bridge railing, went over the side of the bridge railing and landed on its top in a creek.

Walker and his two passengers, 21-year-old Alyssa M. Walker and a 1-month-old boy both from Buncombe, were taken to an area hospital with injuries. Allen was not injured.

One northbound lane of I-57 was shut down for two-and-a-half hours for the crash investigation.

Allen was issued a citation for Improper Lane Usage.
