Gunfire Report Leads to Arrest of Two Juveniles in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON – Two juveniles were arrested over the weekend in Mt. Vernon in connection to shots fired in the 1000 block of South 25th.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, around 2:30 Saturday, officers responded to the area for a report of shots fired. Officers on scene determined two subjects had been in the area and one of the subjects had fired multiple shots from a handgun after a dispute. No one was injured during the incident.

Officers were able to locate witnesses to the incident and develop information regarding the suspects. The officers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies continued the investigation and responded to a residence in the 4100 block of Willow Springs. At the residence officers conducted a search for the suspects. While doing so, officers observed evidence indicating someone had entered the attic of the residence.

After approximately 45 minutes of requesting the suspects exit the attic, the officers made entry to the attic area and located the two suspects hiding inside. Both were taken into custody without incident. Officers also located a handgun in the attic.

As a result of the officer’s work, a 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody on charges of Armed Violence, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm Under the Age of 21.

This juvenile was transported to the Franklin County Juvenile Justice Center pending a court date in Jefferson County. The second person, a 15-year-old juvenile, was taken into custody on a DCFS warrant and held at the Franklin County Juvenile Justice Center pending a court date in Jefferson County.
