U of I Honors Scientists Behind SHEILD COVID-19 Test

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – Over 1,000 Illinois schools use the SHIELD COVID-19 test, and the scientists who developed the technology were honored Monday.

University of Illinois president Tim Killeen gave presidential medallions to the 28 members for what he called their “incredible response to the pandemic.” The researchers created the saliva-based testing that helped reopen U of I campuses last year.

The state is currently offering the test to all kindergartner through 12th grade public schools for free. SHIELD Illinois has administered more than 500-thousand tests at universities, colleges, schools and companies across the state.
