ISP Share More Detail Into Officer-Involved Shooting in Carterville

CARTERVILLE – The Illinois State Police continue to investigate an officer involved shooting that happened in Carterville Tuesday.

Around 2:55 p.m. Tuesday, Carterville officers responded to a report of a man with a gun outside of a home in the 200 block of Dobson Street. A preliminary investigation revealed two responding Carterville officers encountered a man with a shotgun on a front porch of the home.

Officers repeatedly ordered the man to put down the gun, instead he raised the firearm towards officers. The man, later identified as 52-year-old Joseph D. McGrath, of Carterville, was struck by gunfire from Carterville officers and died from his injuries.

McGrath was pronounced dead by the Williamson County coroner at the scene. The officers were uninjured.

ISP Zone 7 investigations is leading the open and ongoing investigation.
