Over $42B Illinois State Budget Passed for New Fiscal Year

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IOCI RADIO) – State lawmakers approved a more than $42 billion state budget for the new fiscal year.

The budget passed the House and Senate along party lines, with Democrats like State Sen. Elgie Sims of Chicago touting the plan. It includes more money for education, closes some corporate tax breaks and spends a portion of the federal American Rescue Plan funding on economic recovery programs for businesses, violence prevention programs and public health.

House GOP Leader Jim Durkin voted against the bill, saying it “spends too much” and doesn’t “do enough to get Illinois back on track.”

Once it’s signed into law, the new budget will take effect July 1.
