SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) – Legislation that passed the Illinois House Wednesday would reduce the penalties for possessing smaller amount of illegal drugs.
Instead of felony charges and jail time, those caught with lower amounts of drugs like meth and heroin would only be charged with a misdemeanor.
State Rep. Carol Ammons of Urbana, a sponsor of the bill, said “it’s time to right the wrongs of the failed war on drugs.”
However, opponents such as State Rep. Patrick Windhorst of Metropolis, worry the bill may have the opposite effect.
The bill narrowly passed on a 61-49 vote and now moves to the Senate.
