SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Republican lawmakers are pushing for an independent commission to draw the state’s next set of legislative districts.
Under the new legislation, the state supreme court would appoint a 16-member group reflecting the demographic’s of Illinois’ population, to set district lines for local lawmakers.
State Sen. Jason Barickman of Bloomington said “this is what the public wants.”
Additionally, State Rep. Tim Butler of Springfield said the change would ensure fairness, with lawmakers no longer drawing maps to potentially benefit one party over another.
The state Senate has been holding hearings statewide, asking for the public’s input on where political boundaries should be drawn.
