SIU Launches Program to Improve Farmers’ Mental, Physical Health

CARBONDALE – The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has launched a pilot program, The Farm Family Resource Initiative, which aims to improve the mental and physical health of Illinois farm owners and their families.

Karen Stallmann, an Agriculture Resource Specialist at SIU, said the pandemic has worsened issues a farmer typically faces.

The helpline number is 1-833-FARM-SOS.

In addition to a new telephone helpline, there are outreach programs covering stress management. The program is debuting in 6 counties, but Stallmann said with additional funding, the hope is for the program to go statewide.
