Illinois Auto Dealers Suing State, Rivian for Direct Sales

CHICAGO (AP) – Illinois auto dealers are suing the state and the electric truck startup Rivian over the selling of vehicles directly to consumers.

The Illinois Automobile Dealers Association allege the secretary of state’s office is ignoring Rivian’s and another startup automaker’s unlicensed sales operations in a state that requires franchised dealers to sell new vehicles.

Dealer association president Pete Sander said the lawsuit filed Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court is meant to both protect consumers as well as Illinois’ hundreds of franchised dealers who contribute to the state’s economy.

Secretary of state spokesman Dave Druker said the lawsuit will be reviewed and discussed with the attorney general’s office.
