Illinois Bill Would Provide Quick Information to Students Struggling with Mental Health Issues

SPRINGFIELD – Legislation in the Illinois House will aim to get quick information to students suffering from mental health issues.

Sponsored by State Rep  Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg and having received unanimous House committee support, the bill would require schools that issue student ID cards for grades seven through 12 to include information about available suicide hotlines.

The idea was proposed by Naperville Central High School student Aparna Ramakrisnan, who created the mental health awareness group, Beyond Charity. Ramakrisnan said she suffers from anxiety and depression, adding it’s vital that students know about the resources.

A House committee suggested the hotline information be included in more places, such as student handbooks.

The bill awaits a full House vote.
