Marion Continuing Plans for 10 Permanent Downtown Murals

MARION – The City of Marion continuing plans to place 10 permanent murals on historic buildings located in the downtown area.

Allison Hasler, the City’s Director of Community Programs, shared where the murals will be located.

They’re currently accepting applications, which can be found here, from artists for the mural project until March 7. The original deadline was set for this Sunday.

Hasler added an award of $1,500 will be given to each concept selected. The City is also seeking $200,000 for the project through the National Endowment for the Arts, which Hasler noted  city officials won’t know until April if and how much they will receive. Hasler is also looking at other funding sources for the project.

If all goes according to plan, Hasler said work on the murals will begin July 1 and should be done “sometime in the late summer, early October time frame.”

Additionally, Marion is also planning to hold an official ribbon cutting and walking tour of all the downtown murals later this year.
