Amtrak to Cut Long-Distant Route Services Due to Less Ridership

WASHINGTON – Amtrak is set to cut services on most of it’s long-distance routes across the nation later this year due to ridership having drastically fallen during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods, long-distance routes will only run three times a week instead of the current daily service. Woods said the cuts will take place October 1 and remain in place until at least next summer, but daily services could be restored as demand improves.

Locally, the move will affect service from the New Orleans to Carbondale route, but the Illini and Saluki lines will not be impacted.
