GALLATIN CO. – Alcohol played a factor in an accident involving a sport side-by-side that injured the driver and killed his passenger Friday afternoon in Gallatin County.
According to Illinois State Police (ISP), around 5:20 p.m., a black 2014 Polaris Razor driven by 30-year-old Derrick J. Jackson of Elizabethtown was traveling north on Forestry Road #534 in the Pounds Hollow Recreation Area when he, for unknown reasons, drove onto the east shoulder of the roadway. Jackson overcorrected, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle, which crossed the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle continued down a steep embankment. Jackson and his passenger, 23-year-old Hanna P. McCree from Herrin, were not wearing their seatbelts.
McCree was pronounced dead at the scene by the Gallatin County Coroner. Jackson was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Jackson was cited for operating an ATV in a recreation area by the U.S. Forestry Service and driving under the influence of alcohol by ISP. The investigation remains ongoing by the ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
