Jefferson Co. – Three are recovering after a wrong way crash on Interstate 57 Wednesday night. According to a release from the Illinois State Police, the accident happened at just after 9:00 at milepost 97 when a vehicle being driven by 71-year-old Robert Bell of Vandalia was parked on the right shoulder of the interstate facing the wrong way. As Bell attempted to merge into the right lane and turn his vehicle around, he was struck by a vehicle in the northbound lane being driven by Thomas Deien of Centralia. Deien and his passenger Brenda Deien suffered major injuries and were both hospitalized. Bell suffered minor injuries in the crash. Charges are pending.
