Washington – The US Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding the Alexander County Housing Authority more than six million dollars to demolish unsafe public housing in Cairo. The announcement was made in a release from the HUD yesterday. It calls the demolition of the Elmwood and McBride buildings an “emergency” due to the lack of funding available to the Alexander County Housing Authority that has made the living conditions in these buildings a danger to the residents. The demolition has been in the plans for more than a year, with the HUD assisting those living in the units with relocation. There is no word at this time on when the demolition will begin.
